While in Tenn. in a Irish /Celtic shop I found a Family Crest of the Collins Family. Although we all know that our heritage is French, I found this interesting. In writing I understand the Crest is a Pelican. How ironic a Pelican, Louisiana, so fourth and so on. But the Crest I purchased was two lions facing each other on their hind legs and each touching the others front paw. The best I can understand, it all depends on what Collins family you follow or understand.
But here we go. COLLINS,(Coilea'in.) The surname Collins has a dule origin,it can be of Irish Gaelic origin, as an anglicised from of O'Coilea'in, a sept, who were located in Co. Limerick, as well as, the O'Cuillia'in who had their stronghold in west Co. Cork.(What all this means I don't know.) Then it says Bla,Bla, Bla Bla Bla. Collins now ranks as the thirtieth most numerous name in Ireland.Bla,Bla,Bla. The name being sixth most numerous in Co.Limerick.
MOTTO: The wounds of life (and) By valour and skill.
NAME variations include: O'Coilea'in(Gaelic), O'Cuillea'in(Gaelic),O'Collins, O'Cullane, Cullane, Collinson.
There is a lot more but that's enough for now. If you want to know more let me know and I'll blog. other information from time to time.

VERY INTERESTING. HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS THAT CREST? WERE YOU LOOKING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THAT OR DID YOU JUST COME ACROSS IT?

RONNIE
I like Celtic music so I was looking for a cd. Andre' pointed it out to me. I didn't buy the cd they were way too expensive and Mike told me his Dad had a bunch of Celtic music he would send me, so I bought a keyring with the family crest of the two lions I described and a small book about the collins family crest. The book gives a history going all the way back to the 1100's. And there is a list of names a a short back ground about them.
ReplyDeleteI'll send more info it you like ??

I WONDER IF THEY WILL HAVE SOME FAMILIAR NAMES IN THE BOOK? LET ME KNOW IF YOU COME ACCROSS ANY.

blah, blah, blah.....
ReplyDeletegreat writing, hahahahah
I never understood all that family crest stuff.
But if we had to make one of our own Coll-a
family what would it consist of...
crawfish, what else?
Our Family Crest would be a little more complicated in my mind. Like a crawfish,a crab,a fish and a shrimp all holding claws danceing in a circle around "Dee Dee's Tee Gros Batou." Now, do any of you remember "Dee Dee's Tee Gros Batou???" Hint: Another very funny story between Daddy and Uncle Luke. Lets here it, who remembers.

GOT ME THERE BROTHER. I HAVE NO RECOLLECTION OF "DEE DEE'S TEE GROS BATOU" OF COURSE, I KNOW THAT IT'S FREDDIE'S LITTLE BIG BOAT BUT WHERE THAT COMES FROM I HAVE NO IDEA. FILL ME IN!!!

I surely do remember "DEE DEE'S TEE GROS BATOU". Perhaps not the whole story, but I do remember the name..that's probably the same damn boat that almost choked me death!!!
ReplyDeleteLove y'all,
C
No, C your wrong that is not the boat that almost chocked you. I know the story about "Dee Dee's Tee Gros Batou" and if I'm not mistaken I even have a picture of it. You know how I know that's not the boat you got chocked in, cause this boat never made it to the water. Dad started building this cabin on a fiberglass hull he had. He was building it under the carport, if any of you remember the carport, where C & Ted's garage is now. Well, Daddy started building, like I said this cabin onto the boat. The original plan was to have just one level, but he then decided to add another level. Uncle Luke kept telling him, "DEE DEE, ITS GONNA BE TOP HEAVY!" But, Dad kept building and Uncle Luke kept telling. Sure enough, the top heavy boat never made it past its maiden voyage!!!! And, once again, Uncle Luke was right. I don't remember if they ever did put it in the water or not, or if Daddy just took Uncle Luke's advice. Is that close Pete??? If not, clue me in.
ReplyDeleteLove Ya All,
Rosie
Very close indeed. However if I'm not mistaken that is the boat Celena was almost strangled by getting her head caught in the top that could be put down. It was a fiberglass hull and so was the one that Celena was almose choked with. But Daddy took the convertable top off and stripped that boat compleatly down. I think it was the same hull.
ReplyDeleteAny way, Daddy began building a little cabin on it just like Rosie said. The idea was to build a cabin so that when he was shrimping or fishing he could get in the cabin to escape the bad weather and continue fishing. He also was going to have it set up so he would have a place to sleep so he could get started fishing earlier in the morning. So really he was going to use it as a traveling camp. He could ancor it anywhere and have a camp to use. Not a bad idea really.BUT,,,!!!
I guess Daddy got a little carried away with it and it turned out to be hugh. I mean HUGH!! Uncle Luke would come by almost every day to see how the boat was coming along. Uncle Luke would tell Daddy that the boat would not float. He teased him every day for like months. Over and over again. He would laugh at him and make fun of his boat. He would tell him "Freddie it aint gonna float, it's too heavy, it's going to sink. And he would lough. Daddy continued his work and compleated the boat. It was Hugh.
Daddy never did put that boat in the water. I think he finished it just to show Uncle Luke that he could build it. But it never saw water. It sat under the car port for what seem like for ever. And Uncle Luke would still come by and tease Daddy about that boat.
I'm the one who named it. I took a picture of it and mounted it on a piece of wood, varnished it and wrote on it "Dee Dees Tee Gros Batou." I gave it to Daddy as a gift for some special occasion. Daddy kept that picture for a long time. I would ask him about it now and then and he would show it to me.
I don't know what ever happened to either the picture or the boat. But I do remember hideing so I could laugh when Uncle Luke came by because I didn't want to laugh in front of Daddy. But it was sooo funny to hear Uncle Luke tease Daddy. It was so much fun to be around Daddy and Uncle Luke. I went fishing with them sometimes and I always ended up laughing my head off. That was one h _ _ l of a relationship them two had. They were funny together.
So that's the "Dee Dees Tee Gros Batou" story.
TTFN,
Peter
You are so right Peter. Now that I think about it, it was the same fiberglass hull!!! But, Daddy begin his demolition and remodeling!!!! LOL LOL, who remodels a boat but Daddy!?!! Gotta Love It!!! I remember getting such a big kick out of Uncle Luke teasing Daddy about that over and over again. I think you are also right about it never seeing its maiden voyage and that Daddy finished it just to show Uncle Luke that he could build it. Yea, they were funny couple when they were together. What great times we had and are still having!!!
ReplyDeleteLove U all!
Rosie
Now ya'll are telling a story that I remember!!!!
ReplyDeleteI knew the story even before ya'll told it
but I know a part that ya'll may not know.
You see Uncle Luke would tease Daddy and Daddy kept building,
he let me play in it all the time, He built the windows round and put fiberglass on them....
Uncle Luke would tease and Daddy would say nothing, Uncle Luke would say it wouldn't float and Daddy looked mad,
but you know what he would tell me after Uncle Luke would leave, as
I watched him build and helped him when he let me?
He would tell me that it was never going to go in the water, that he was building it so I could have a camp....
Now I know as an adult that wasn't true but if ya'll remember, he let me play in it all the time, and one day he caught me a wild rabbit in the yard and he let me put it in my camp-boat, and he told me it was going to die because wild rabbits couldn't live in a tamed area.
He warned me it was going to die but I didn't believe it, so every day for about a week i would play with my little rabbit in the tee gros' batou
and Daddy would come check on me and the rabbit and give me tips on how to keep it alive but still reminding me that it would probably die.
Then one day I went in there and my little rabbit was dead and Daddy was so mad but I don't think he was mad at me, but at the rabbit and he said, "Lilly, that is why we don't let you have pets, you can't take it when they die and all pets die!"
It was my little space away from all the people living in the house, away from all the little nieces that were always hanging around,
Daddy was nice about telling me I could play there but not everyone could play in it at the same time so everyone else had to ask permission.
I don't know if he did that because he was afraid it would fall over or if he really wanted to give me a space to call my own...
funny how one little boat meant something different to all of us,
it was the same boat C almost died in...
C you remember, the boat we used to play in, I know Tiffy remembers because we started a club and that is where we held the meetings, remember Tiffy?
These are all great stories of "Dee Dee's Tee Gros Batou." As was noted that boat meant something different to eace of us. I never thought when I named it that it would mean so much to us.
ReplyDeleteOne other memory for me is all the fishing trips we had in it before it became a camp.
And the time I took Raynell fishing and got lost some where in the gulf and could not find my way back in to catfish bay. But eventually I did find my way back.
Thanks for all the blogs.

Can someone find a picture of the TEE GROS BATOU and get it to me so I can scrap it and then put it on the blog?
ReplyDeleteAwesome stories. I wish I had a memory as good as everyone else's. Although I remember the boat, I don't remember playing in it (probably because my a!! was punished, AGAIN!!). Nannie and I spoke about this boat last night and it was not the same boat that I thought because I remember Daddy, for a short period, taking a little boat to go and "babysit" some type of well or something for the company that Uncle Luke worked for at the time. He'd always have the "night shift" and I thought that was TEE GROS BATOU.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm going earn my pay so I'll be in touch lata.

C, the small barge you are thinking of was one Joe built for daddy
to babysit uncle Luke's wells,,
Mom and I went with him a few times on that barge...
BORING!!!!!!
it was one room with a toilet on the back deck in the middle of the water
nothing, absolutely nothing to do
yet daddy loved that barge thing, went there often
